What is hydroplaning?

Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up under the tread of a tire, which leads to a loss of contact with the road surface. This phenomenon often takes place during heavy rain when water accumulates on the asphalt. As a motorcycle (or any vehicle) travels at speed over this water, the tires can lose grip as they float on this layer of water instead of making solid contact with the pavement.

This can result in a loss of steering control, braking capability, and ultimately cause an accident if the rider is not prepared. Understanding hydroplaning is crucial for motorcycle riders, especially in adverse weather conditions, as it helps them recognize the signs of reduced traction and take necessary precautions, such as slowing down to maintain control.
